If you want to see what gear you are wearing you have to press Up to see your chest, then press up again to see your helm, etc. Instead of a cursor, it highlights a ring around the item in the stash window.

So when you open up your inventory, you have a single item selected, you then have to press-> to move to the right and view the next item in your stash.
